Post & Beam to Timber-Frame Comparison |

||
| Post & Beam homes are not designed to incorporate a fixed “Box” framework. The house structure is comprised of 2”x6” exterior stud walls, with interior posts, that are pre-built, and ready to be set in place. The interior of the house is a combination of exposed ceiling beams and structural posts. Ceilings are dramatic cathedral and typically covered with wood tongue & grove. | BASIC STRUCTURE |
What is Timber Frame construction? It is a centuries old building technique in which the structural members of the building are crafted from large solid timbers and are connected by "mortise and tenon" joints. Timber Frame houses are specifically designed to fit around a structural “frame box”. Enclosure systems typically provide for the structural beams to remain exposed on the inside of the home, creating a dramatic visual effect. |
| Post & Beam homes are a combination of traditional structural woods and heavy engineered timbers. | Structural Timbers |
Timber Frame houses use all heavy natural timbers for their structural bearing supports.. The raw structural timbers cost is -- 3-4 times higher than those timbers used in a VPT home. |
| Post & Beam homes use beautiful natural wood timbers that are specifically engineered to accomplish a specific house support task. | Working with Timbers |
Timber Frame houses use numerous large timbers that must be all precisely cut-to-length and then meticulously notched and shaped to facilitate the intricate “joinerying” process. |
| With a Post & Beam home you have the option of how much, where, and what species – interior wood(s) you want. Post & Beam homes are a balance of owner desired wall materials (V-Grove, T&G, Drywall, Wainscoting, etc.) finishes. These interiors have clean but powerful looks. | Interior Lines |
The basic nature of Timber Frame houses is that their interiors are a continuous forest of wood. There is little or no “Mixture” of interior surfaces. |
| Post & Beam homes homes are precisely engineered to be rapidly field constructed. The structural wood components are more support efficient and less costly. Interior walls can be a combination of materials – yielding a dramatic savings in product cost and installation time. Post & Beam homes range 20%-30% less than Timber Frame! | Cost-per-Square Foot |
The whole heavy wood “box” structure and “joinery” process -- coupled with both extensive exterior and interior wood cost, installation, and finish – are inherently much more time-consuming and costly. |
| Without the riggers of dealing with heavy timbers, joinerying, and installing and finishing wood everywhere – a Post & Beam home can be “Turn-Key” ready in 120 days or less. | Time to Completion |
Again, the nature of hand-crafting a timber frame structure is simply a much more complex and inherently time-consuming process. |
Vermont Pinnacle Timber offers both Post & Beam and Timber-Frame construction. |
